A New Dawn for Mental Health: No HST!

A New Dawn for Mental Health: No HST!

Effective June 20, 2024, the CRPO  announced that these services, provided by qualified psychotherapists and counselling therapists, are now exempt from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and HST. This change includes individual, couple, and family sessions marking a small step forward for more accessible and affordable therapy.

A Positive Shift for Clients

The elimination of the HST on psychotherapy services offers multiple benefits for clients seeking mental health support:

  1. Cost Reduction: The removal of the HST translates directly into lower costs for therapy sessions. For many, the cost of therapy has been a significant barrier to accessing the support they need. Clients can now receive the same quality of care at a reduced price, making therapy more affordable and accessible.
  2. Increased Access to Services: Lower costs can lead to increased access to mental health services. With that said, Individuals who previously could not afford therapy may now find it within their financial reach. Additionally, this change is particularly beneficial for those on fixed incomes, students, and low-income families. These changes may also allow those using private benefits to extend their yearly amount for longer.
  3. Encouragement for Regular Sessions: Consistent therapy is often crucial for effective mental health treatment. With the cost savings from the HST exemption, clients may be more inclined to attend regular sessions. In turn, leading to better outcomes and more sustained mental health improvements.

Benefits for Therapy as a Whole

  1. Reduced Administrative Tasks: Psychotherapists will no longer need to manage the administrative tasks associated with collecting and remitting HST. This reduction in paperwork can allow therapists to focus more on their clients and less on administrative duties.
  2. Promotion of Mental Health Awareness: This policy signifies the importance of mental health care in Canada. By making therapy more accessible, it promotes greater awareness and acceptance of mental health issues, encouraging more individuals to seek the help they need without stigma or financial concern.
  3. Support for Comprehensive Care: The inclusion of couple and family therapy sessions in the HST exemption acknowledges the importance of holistic and inclusive approaches to mental health. It supports the idea that mental health is not just an individual concern but can be interconnected with family dynamics and relationships.

Looking Ahead

The removal of HST on psychotherapy services is a crucial step towards improving mental health care in Canada. By making therapy more affordable and accessible, this policy change has the potential to positively impact the lives of countless individuals and families. As mental health continues to gain recognition as a vital component of overall well-being, initiatives like this pave the way for a healthier, more supportive society.

Whether you are seeking individual support, couples therapy, or family counselling, the new HST exemption ensures that mental health care is within reach.
